Aid to Afghanistan

A collaboration between World Doctors, the organization "WeWorld" and the "JRS Jesuit Refugee Service"

It is widely known that the Taliban have ruled the country since August 2021. All Christian aid organizations have been expelled from the country, including our long-standing project partners, the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) Fathers and their Afghan employees, who have had to leave the country head over heels.

The situation in the country is unspeakably terrible. In addition to the terror, the violence, the cruel oppression of women, the corruption and the devastating natural disasters (earthquakes, floods, drought), there are defenseless widows, hunger and thirst, the onset of winter cold, diseases and much more.

Until the Taliban seized power in August 2021, our association had supported school and education projects of the JRS Jesuit Refugee Service in Afghanistan for many years together with our member Margret Bergmann. In recent years, the main focus has been on the education of girls and women in Daikundi province.

Suddenly, however, this was no longer possible. Nevertheless, our association and many benefactors are committed to helping particularly needy people in Afghanistan.

By working with the organization GVC WeWorld, we found a new way forward. The non-governmental organization, which is based in Italy and operates in 27 countries, has a great deal of experience in the areas of water and food supply, the health sector and education. Since 2002, it has been working in Afghanistan, particularly for people, children and young people on the outskirts of cities and in rural areas in Guzarah, Zinda Jan, Pashtun Zargun, Khosan and the province of Herat. In the non-urban and agricultural areas, the organization has helped with projects to support families and small farmers living from agriculture and livestock farming. As part of an emergency food program, they helped 1,500 families living in extreme poverty, paying particular attention to single women and widows who were responsible for the household and children. Over 2000 pregnant goats were given to over 600 internally displaced families (IDPs).

WeWorld-Afghanistan is officially recognized by the Taliban government. The programs are approved by the Ministry of Economy and are carried out with the approval of the local authorities.

Since July 2022, our association has been supporting an 8-month emergency program started by WeWorld in Herat for 240 single women, widows, their children and elderly family members. The project beneficiaries are a total of 1,200 people.

With monthly support of €80.00 per family, the people receive food, hygiene articles and medical aid.

As women are not even allowed to go out alone to beg on the streets under the Taliban regime, single women and their family members are the people most affected by the need.

Since July 2022, the Taliban government has once again allowed the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) to provide food, education and medical assistance to people in the refugee camps for internally displaced persons around Kabul.
