Women's projects in rural areas
In cooperation with the African NGO "The Village Trust", World Doctors made several women's projects possible in Kenya.
After drilling boreholes for irrigation, a greenhouse for growing vegetables was built in Mwangaza in south-western Kenya. The project helps women to grow vegetables all year round and sell them at local markets.
Another women's project supported by the association involves the production of sanitary towels in Meru County and Nakuru, which are sold at local markets. Sewing machines have been purchased and courses held to teach women how to produce sanitary towels using local materials. The project enables young girls to attend school regularly, even during their menstruation.
In eastern Kenya's Meru County, the association facilitated the construction of a training and multifunctional building for a women's cooperative in collaboration with the local NGO “The Village Trust”. TVT offers seminars on agricultural cultivation and other topics, training, literacy and computer courses for women.
In cooperation with the municipality of Bolzano, the association made it possible to build a deep-water well in 2020 to supply the local population and irrigate the TVT's gardens, where the women grow their vegetables. They also learn everything they need to know about agricultural cultivation and healthy nutrition for their families.
Due to the severe drought in East Africa, the association already supported the provision of a daily meal to several schools in Meru County in 2022.
In 2023, the association is financing a deep-water borehole and access to clean drinking water for around 6,000 people in Samburu County. It has not rained in this area for four years and a lack of water is one of the biggest causes of poverty and disease.
At Mangima Hospital, World Doctors financed the laboratory equipment, a solar system and water tanks.
