Gubrie/Attat/Bolzano – The non-profit organization World Doctors looks back on a highly active and successful summer in Ethiopia. Over the past few weeks, several volunteers from South Tyrol were deployed across various local projects, spanning educational training, childcare, and essential technical maintenance.
A key focus this year was on education
Three South Tyrolean English teachers—Christine, Barbara, and Ferdinand—spent two weeks at the Walburg School in Gubrie conducting a specialized training course for 32 local teachers. The aim was to enhance the local educators' English language skills while sharing modern teaching methods and new pedagogical approaches. The participating teachers expressed great enthusiasm and gratitude for the engaging training sessions.
Summer Camp for over 150 children
Concurrently, the Social Center in Attat hosted its sixth annual summer camp, an initiative launched by World Doctors in 2019. Volunteers Emma, David, and Lorenz led the project, which was organized in cooperation with the Diocese of Emdibir and local team leaders. Jochen was helping the first week. Under the motto "Family of Love", around 75 children per week from 28 different parishes enjoyed two action-packed weeks filled with sports, games, music, and dance. The sports equipment and games were transported directly from Bolzano to Ethiopia, thanks to the generous support of numerous donors in South Tyrol.
Technical and infrastructure Work at the Attat Hospital
Local healthcare infrastructure also received crucial support: South Tyrolean craftsmen Franz, Rolli, and Paul spent two weeks at the Attat Hospital carrying out vital repairs and upgrades. In addition to installing new faucets and door frames, they constructed partition walls for patient wards, added an extra roof layer for thermal insulation, and installed a water descaling system to ensure sustainable water maintenance.
