Over the past ten years, World Doctors has set up projects in the fields of education, medicine and hygiene using South Tyrolean taxpayers' money.
Five per thousand on your tax return. For World Doctors, that makes all the difference. "Five per mille more or less decides whether people in our areas of operation go to school, have fresh water or even play football," says President Toni Pizzecco. Together with his colleagues, he drew up a list of projects in 2022 that have been created in recent years with the help of five per mille South Tyrolean taxpayers. And which might never have been created otherwise.
Five per mille for a new attitude to life. Leisure is a foreign word in Ethiopian Attat, it is not planned. Traditionally, no one here goes to sports, sings in the choir or attends workshops. The idea first germinated in 2012 in the plans of World Doctors and the diocese of Emdibir. The last installment was paid in 2018. Now, next to the hospital in Attat, 180 kilometers southeast of Addis Ababa, a social center with reading and seminar rooms, sports fields and regular summer camps brings people together.
Five per mille for a safe birth. The San Marco Clinic in the Ethiopian district of Cheha Woreda specializes in pregnant women, women in labour and women who have recently given birth. Following the construction of the infirmary, World Doctors financed the accommodation for the nuns who run the clinic. A staff house was also built, the electricity and water supply organized and the grounds fenced in. The clinic has been in operation since 2021.
Five per mille for the chance of an education. The Dubbo school is well-known in Ethiopia. Former President Haile Mariam Desalegn learned to read and write here. 1,100 pupils crowd the grounds. Every time a classroom is finished, two new ones are needed. In 2020, four new classes were completed with the support of World Doctors. Pupils learn a trade at St. Anthony College TVET in the Gurage region. Since 2020, the college has had a new workshop for metal training, a library and a dormitory for students. In Soddo, in southern Ethiopia, the Abba Pascal Secondary School is being built for 800 girls and boys.
Five per mille for clean water. For 21 villages and many women and children, the long march for water has come to an end. In 2020, 21 wells for 6,600 people were built in the Ethiopian region of Gurage.
Five per mille for a decent life. Ashabari is the house of hope in Amtala, India. Every year, World Doctors cover part of the costs of the house so that 120 people with severe disabilities can find a home here.
